What place does composition have in a University? What place does the University have in the world of contemporary composition?
The thesis explores the intersection of art, academia, and organizational pressures in the field of university composition through interviews with composer-academics. It theorizes the tensions between freedom and control, authenticity and rationalization, and proposes an ideal type of university that is in harmony with the fundamental artistic and academic ideal of autonomy, called the 'Liminal University.'
